Texans are a moral people

-

Shame on Cornyn

Regarding “Photos provide a glimpse inside Texas border facility where migrant children are held,” (March 22): On March 22, Sen. John Cornyn tweeted, “President Biden has instead emphasized the humane treatment of immigrants, regardless of the legal status. @nytimes”

He criticized the president for treating people humanely.

How can we, as Texans, as Americans, as a moral people, not be deeply offended by that thinking. If he truly means it, there are no words. If he said it for votes, shame on him.

Voting rights

Regarding “Our most fundamental right is at stake,” (A13, March 22): You can’t purchase cigarettes or alcohol, get a COVID-19 vaccine, or pick up a letter at the post office without an ID. So why would you not want to be certain that someone is a citizen and has a residence in our state before they can execute the most sacred of rights in our country? If there is a need for a mail-in ballot, shouldn’t, at a minimum, there be required a signature verification? If there is any potential for fraud, such as ballot harvesting, why would you permit that? I would think that if there was anything proposed in Austin to help secure the integrity of our voting system that you would be in favor of it. To be anything else, as suggested in your editorial, is at the very least, just incredulous!

Texas experienced record voter turnout in the 2020 elections, showing how dedicated Texans are to exercising their right to vote and participating in our democracy. Unfortunately, many bills filed in the Texas Legislature this session fail to support voters. Instead, these bills

call for barriers on when and how we can vote

Texans want our election system to be free, fair and accessible to all eligible voters. Senate Bill 7 is a nightmare for democracy. It puts up many unnecessary barriers for voters, including voters who are disabled. It even allows poll watchers to intimidate voters by taking pictures at the polling place!

Texas election officials have asserted that the 2020 elections were accurate. Why make voting more complicated and inaccessible except to reduce the number of voters in Texas? Encouraging all eligible voters to participate in our elections should be the intention of all politicians.

Tell your legislators that you oppose SB 7.
