LYNN BARNETT “BARNEY” HEDRICK
1939-2021
Barney Hedrick passed away peacefully at his home in Houston on Friday, March 19, 2021. Barney was born on June 24, 1936, to Leo and Mildred Hedrick. A native Houstonian, he attended West University Elementary, Pershing Jr. High, Lamar High School, and the University of Texas. He graduated from University of Houston and Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. He served in the 174th Fighter Wing of the Texas Air National Guard. Barney met Janice, his wife of 60 years, on a blind date. They were married on September 5, 1959.
His banking career began at Bank of the Southwest in 1957. He transferred to Fannin Bank in 1963 and stayed with that bank’s various changes until his retirement as President and Chairman of the Board in 1993. Barney was very active in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo beginning in 1968. He volunteered on the Corral Club, Group Ticket Sales, Speakers, and Souvenir Program Committees. He was a director and Lifetime Vice President of the organization and proudly held the premier parking spot outside NRG Center.
The most important thing in his life was his family. He is predeceased by his wife Janice VanStone Hedrick, his parents, Mildred and Leo Hedrick, and brother Scotty Hedrick. He is survived by his son, Scott Hedrick, daughter Andrea Parker and her husband Allen; grandchildren Peyton Parker, Tripp Parker, and Kelsey Pierce; brotherin-law Lonnie VanStone and wife Danlyn; and nephews Troy and Greg VanStone and their families.Barney accomplished a lot in his lifetime, but his most cherished role was that of PawPaw. His favorite saying was “children are wonderful, grandchildren are magic.”
His other passions included a very erratic golf game, fishing, hunting, traveling, spending time at Braeburn Country Club and sharing laughs and stories with many lifelong friends. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, he hoped that friends and family would gather to share memories and say goodbye. Out of respect for family and friends, his celebration of life will be scheduled later next summer at a time when all who wish to attend may do so safely.
