Glasnow fans 14; Rays top Rangers

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tyler Glasnow struck out a career-high 14 in 72⁄3 innings and Willy Adames homered in the seventh to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the sputtering Texas Rangers 1-0 on Monday night.

Texas dropped its fourth in a row and was shut out for the third time in four games.

Glasnow (1-0) allowed two hits and got his first win of the season after pitching well but not being involved in decisions in two previous starts. He allowed Eli White’s single up the middle off the glove of diving second baseman Brandon Lowe with one out in the fifth and Jose Trevino’s leadoff single in the eighth.

Adames homered off Taylor Hearn (0-1) with two outs in the seventh, just the third hit yielded by Texas pitchers.

YANKEES 3, BLUE JAYS 1: Kyle Higashioka homered twice to support Gerrit Cole, and New York beat Toronto in the Blue Jays’ temporary home at their spring training ballpark in Dunedin, Fla.

PADRES 6, PIRATES 2: Yu Darvish allowed three hits over seven dominant innings, Wil Myers drove in five runs and visiting San Diego extended its strong start.

BREWERS 6, CUBS 3: Pinch-hitter Luis Urias drove in three runs with a go-ahead double, and host Milwaukee scored six runs in the sixth inning. Freddy Peralta (2-0) struck out 10 over six innings of two-hit ball for the victory.

NATIONALS 5, CARDINALS 2: Kyle Schwarber doubled in a run in his delayed Nationals debut, Andrew Stevenson had a pinch-hit homer and visiting Washington beat St. Louis.

MARLINS 5, BRAVES 3 (10): Garrett Cooper had three RBIs and drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning off Jacob Webb, lifting visting Miami past Atlanta.

ANGELS 10, ROYALS 3: Shohei Ohtani was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Alex Cobb allowed three runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts in 52⁄3 innings for visting Los Angeles.

WHITE SOX 4, INDIANS 3: Pinch runner Nick Madrigal scored the winning run from second when Nick Williams grounded into fielder’s choice to first in the bottom of the ninth for host Chicago. Cleveland’s Yu Chang attempted to get the forceout at second, but he hit Yasmani Grandal and rolled away.

REDS 3, GIANTS 0: Jesse Winkler was 2 for 4 with a two-run home run in the third inning, and Joey Votto added a solo homer in the sixth for visiting Cincinnati.

ATHLETICS 9, DIAMONDBAC­KS 5: Mike Chapman’s solo homer capped a three-run fifth inning for visiting Oakland, which held off Arizona’s charge with three more runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
