HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Girls
Brittyn Corbishley, College Park
Notable: Corbishley won her second title in the 185-pound division at the state wrestling championships Saturday. She pinned Katy Tompkins’ Nicole Blinn at the 1:35 mark of the final match. Corbishley joined teammate Olivia DeGeorgio in the winner’s circle after the latter won her second gold at 95 pounds. Corbishley and DeGeorgio both finished their seasons 20-0.
What Corbishley said: “I feel like I was expected to win. And I found that when Olivia wins, I feel like there’s more pressure. Because everyone expects us to win because we’re a duo.”
Other nominees
Kaitlyn Bryant, Tompkins: Bryant took gold in the 165-pound division at the state wrestling meet with a 7-1 decision against Clear Falls’ Camryn Tresler. She finished her season 24-0.
Jayden Bazemore, Cypress Ranch: Bazemore won the 128-pound wrestling division, earning an 8-3 decision over Plano West’s Devin Patton. She finished her season 19-0.
Ja’Dasia Sims, Manvel: Sims played a big role in helping Manvel win the Region III-5A track and field title. She won the high jump (5-6) and ran on the winning 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay teams.
Boys
Eli Sheeren, Klein
Notable: Sheeren won his second consecutive title in the 195-pound division at the state wrestling championships Saturday, pinning Prosper’s Chase Parham at the 5:03 mark of the final match. He also pinned his first two state opponents in under 1:20.
Sheeren finished his senior season with a 24-0 record.
What Sheeren said: “It’s a lot of hard work paid off, going to work every day, wrestling every day, wrestling my coach – that’s really what gets it done for me.”
Other nominees
Trevion McCalla, Atascocita: McCalla helped the Eagles win the Region III-6A track and field title, winning the 100 and 200 meters with times of 10.27 and 20.94, respectively.
Jalen Walthall, Manvel: Walthall helped the Mavericks win the Region III-5A track and field championship, capturing the triple jump (47-07.75) and taking second place in the high jump (6-6).
Carter Gordy, Lake Creek: Gordy became the first track and field athlete in school history to qualify for state, winning the 3,200-meter run (9:25.03) and taking second in the 1,600 (4:16.23) at the Region III-5A meet.
