Phillips’ HR helps Rays cool off A’s

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Brett Phillips hit a tworun homer in the sixth inning Tuesday night as the Tampa Bay Rays held on for a 4-3 win over Oakland, handing the Athletics their second loss in 16 games.

It was the first one-run loss of the year for Oakland, which has won five games by a run.

RANGERS 6, ANGELS 1: Joey Gallo ended the longest home run drought of his career at 20 games with a tiebreakin­g two-run shot as Texas won in Arlington.

Nick Solak homered twice to help the Rangers stop a four-game losing streak.

BLUE JAYS 9, NATIONALS 5: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit three home runs, including a grand slam and a solo shot off Washington ace Max Scherzer, and had seven RBIs as Toronto won in Dunedin, Fla.

Guerrero’s slam in the third put the Blue Jays ahead 4-3 and ended Scherzer’s scoreless streak at 19 innings. Scherzer joined Ivan Nova as the only pitchers to have allowed a homer to both Guerrero Jr. and his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero.

BRAVES 5, CUBS 0: Ian Anderson allowed one hit in seven innings and Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a 481-foot home run as Atlanta won at home.

RED SOX 2, METS 1: Garrett Richards struck out 10 and Bobby Dalbec hit his first homer of the season for visiting Boston.

YANKEES, 5, ORIOLES 1: Corey Kluber had his best start in two years to earn his first win for visiting New York, becoming the first Yankees starter other than former Astro Gerrit Cole to pitch into the seventh inning this season.

PIRATES 2, ROYALS 1: Pinch hitter Wilmer Difo delivered the go-ahead single in the seventh inning as Pittsburgh ended visiting Kansas City’s five-game winning streak.

TIGERS 5, WHITE SOX 2: Nike Goodrum hit a goahead two-run shot in the seventh inning, and Miguel Cabrera and Jonathan Schoop also homered for visiting Detroit.

INDIANS 7, TWINS 4: Franmil Reyes homered twice, with one going an estimated 452 feet and the other 434 feet, as Cleveland won at home.

REDS 6, DODGERS 5: Joey Votto’s two-run double in the seventh was the difference as Cincinnati won in Los Angeles.

CARDINALS 5, PHILLIES 2: Carlos Martinez pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning for his first win as a starter since 2018 for host St. Louis.

BREWERS 5, MARLINS 4: Adrian Houser pitched effectivel­y into the sixth inning and hit his first career home run, and Tyrone Taylor went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs as Milwaukee won at home.

ROCKIES 7, GIANTS 5 (10): Ryan McMahon and C.J. Cron hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the 10th inning to lift visiting Colorado.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 5, PADRES 1: Merrill Kelly gave up one run on four hits in six innings and Carson Kelly hit a two-run homer as Arizona won in Phoenix to move above .500 for the first time this season.
