A&M advances; Rice’s run ends

CARY, N.C. — Texas A&M freshman Laney Carroll buried the decisive kick in a shootout to send the Aggies over Oklahoma State on Wednesday and to their seventh NCAA Elite Eight.

Texas A&M edged Oklahoma State in the shootout 4-3 after the teams duked it out to a 3-3 draw after 110 minutes of play at WakeMed Soccer Park.

After the Cowgirls’ Hannah Webb missed her attempt in the fifth round of kicks, Carroll confidently took the ball from the center official, placed it on the spot and stymied Oklahoma State goalkeeper Emily Plotz, who guessed the wrong way.

Both teams made their first three shootout attempts with Taylor Ziemer, Barbara Olivieri and Daria Britton connecting for the Aggies (12-3-1). Oklahoma State (13-3-2) missed its fourth- and fifth-round attempts. The Aggies likewise missed their fourth attempt, making it 3-3 heading into the fifth round.

The contest was tied after 110 minutes, despite Texas A&M owning wide margins in shots (38-11), shots-on-goal (16-5) and corner kicks (16-6).

Texas A&M will next face North Carolina (17-1-0) at noon Sunday.

VIRGINIA 3, RICE 0

Sophomore Diana Ordonez recorded her second hat trick of the season, lifting the Cavaliers into the NCAA Elite Eight and ending the Owls’ 11-match unbeaten streak. The Prosper native gave Virginia all the offense it would need with a penalty-kick goal in the 37th minute, adding scores in the 68th and 82nd minutes.

It was a tough finish to the season for Rice (14-3-1), which had allowed just 11 goals while scoring 38 on the season entering Wednesday’s match.

Virginia (13-4-2) will next face TCU in an Elite Eight match at 4 p.m. Sunday.

TCU 3 GEORGETOWN 1 (PK)

The Horned Frogs withstood an attacking Hoyas offense and an ill-timed weather delay to advance to the Elite Eight on penalty kicks 3-1 after a 1-1 tie.

Sophomore Michelle Slater scored the only goal for TCU (12-1-2) in the 77th minute to tie the game. Maya Fernandez-Powell scored for Georgetown (12-0-2) in the 31st minute.
