Olson, Athletics hold off Red Sox

BOSTON — James Kaprielian got the victory in his first major league start with five innings of one-run ball, Matt Olson homered and the Oakland Athletics held off the Boston Red Sox 4-1 Wednesday night.

Sean Murphy and Jed Lowrie also had RBIs for the A’s, who will try for a three-game sweep Thursday.

METS 7, ORIOLES 1: Taijuan Walker (3-1) allowed one run and four hits over seven innings as part of a fivehitter and Kevin Pillar had a two-run triple off former Met Matt Harvey as New York won at home for its seventh straight victory.

YANKEES 1, RAYS 0: Gerrit Cole struck out 12 over eight stellar innings, Aaron Hicks had a sacrifice fly and New York won at St. Petersburg, Fla. Cole (5-1) scattered four hits and has five starts this season of at least 10 strikeouts and no walks to break Mike Mussina’s singleseas­on team record set in 2001.

INDIANS 2, CUBS 1 (10): Amed Rosario’s bases-loaded single with two outs in the 10th inning lifted host Cleveland. Rosario, who drove in Cleveland’s first run with a sixth-inning double, singled to right off Keegan Thompson (1-1), giving the Indians a sweep of the twogame series. Willson Contreras was 4 for 5 for the Cubs.

PADRES, ROCKIES SPLIT: Victor Caratini lined a two-out grand slam in the sixth, powering virus-depleted San Diego over Colorado 5-3 in a doublehead­er opener at Denver. Josh Fuentes capped a big night with a two-out, walk-off single in the eighth inning after earlier hitting a two-run homer as the Rockies won the nightcap 3-2.

BREWERS 4, CARDINALS 1: Travis Shaw hit a tiebreakin­g double and Avisail Garcia added a two-run homer in the eighth inning as Milwaukee won at home.

BLUE JAYS 4, BRAVES 1: Teoscar Hernandez hit two homers and drove in three runs, Hyun Jin Ryu pitched seven sharp innings and Toronto won at Atlanta.

REDS 5, PIRATES 1 (10): Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez combined to drive in four 1runs in the 10th inning and Cincinnati’s bullpen threw 5 ⁄3 hitless innings at Pittsburgh.

PHILLIES 5, NATIONALS 2 (10): Rhys Hoskins hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning as visiting Philadelph­ia rallied and then took the lead against Washington closer Brad Hand. Philadelph­ia has won seven of its last nine.

DODGERS 7, MARINERS 1: Julio Urias held Seattle to two hits over seven innings and Max Muncy contribute­d a two-run homer as Los Angeles won at home.

TIGERS 4, ROYALS 2: Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs and surpassed Omar Vizquel for the most major league hits by a Venezuelan player, leading host Detroit to a win. Cabrera’s two RBI singles gave him 2,878, one more than Vizquel, who played his last game in 2012. Kansas City lost its 10th straight.

WHITE SOX 13, TWINS 8: Rookie Andrew Vaughn hit his first career home run, Yasmani Grandal connected for the second straight day host Chicago routed Minnesota. Jose Abreu drove in three runs and Billy Hamilton matched his career high with four hits.

MARLINS 3, DIAMONDBAC­KS 2: Cody Poteet won his major league debut, Jesus Aguilar homered for a third straight game and Miami won at Phoenix.
