Gauff sets up match vs. Osaka

Teenager Coco Gauff beat veteran Hsieh Su-wei 6-1, 6-2, in the rain-plagued Western & Southern Open at Mason, Ohio, setting up a showdown with No. 2 seed Naomi Osaka in the second round.

No. 12 seed Simon Halep won for the first time since May by defeating Magda Linette 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Halep had been sidelined with a calf injury.

Former Pirate sentenced: Felipe Vazquez, the former major league pitcher convicted of having sex with a 13-year-old girl, was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison.

Vazquez, 30, will get credit for 23 months of time served, meaning he’ll be eligible for parole in one month. However, he could spend more time behind bars because he faces charges in Florida and Missouri in connection with the same victim7.

Vazquez was an All-Star reliever with the Pirates in 2019 but was arrested in September of that year.

Sun end Lynx’s run: Jasmine Thomas scored 19 points, Jonquel Jones had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Connecticu­t beat visiting Minnesota 72-60 to snap the Lynx’s eight-game winning streak.

In other WNBA games, Allisha Gray had 20 points to help Dallas win at Chicago 80-76; Brittney Griner had 25 points, seven rebounds and four blocks as host Phoenix held off Indiana 84-80; Kelsey Plum scored 21 of her 24 points in the second half, and Las Vegas beat visiting Washington 93-83; and Brittney Sykes led host Los Angeles with 17 points, including four in overtime, of an 85-80 victory over Atlanta.
