Tickets on sale for HGO’s return to Wortham
Single tickets to Houston Grand Opera’s 2021-22 season are now on sale. Following the company’s all-virtual 2021-22 season, HGO Digital, live performances return to Wortham Theater Center beginning Oct. 22.
The 67th season kicks off with an “Opening Night Performance of ‘Carmen’ and Celebration Dinner” on Ray C. Fish Plaza at Wortham. The black-tie evening chaired by Betty and Jess B. Tutor offers patrons and season-ticket holders an opportunity to meet HGO’s new general director, Khori Dastoor.
In total, there are 36 planned performances across six productions and three community performances. Half of this season’s main-stage operas will be conducted by women, more than any season in the company’s 66-year history.
“The Snowy Day,” “Dialogues of the Carmelites,” “The Magic Flute,” “Turandot” and “Romeo and Juliet” round out the season. HGO will host “An Evening with Jonas Kaufmann” for one night only on Oct. 6, marking the international tenor’s HGO debut and inaugural Houston performance.
Come February, HGOco — which stands for company, community and collaboration programming — presents the company’s 72nd world premiere, “Turn and Burn, A Rodeo Opera,” to coincide with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The 75minute chamber opera is part of the Song of Houston initiative and incorporates interviews with rodeo athletes, including a smalltown, barrel-racing champion.
The second season of HGO Digital offerings will also be available for remote viewing access.
HGO’s COVID-19 policy is subject to change. For now, under the guidance of partners in Houston Methodist, masks will be required throughout Wortham Theater Center, including in seats. Increased hand sanitation stations will be stationed throughout the venue. Temperature checks may be required before entering the building.
