From guac to sea glass, greens inspire more top colors

Next year continues to look like a big one for green, with two more paint companies announcing a shade of green as its Color of the Year for 2022, on the heels of PPG’s announcement that “Olive Sprig” would be its next top color.

In a statement laced with Tex-Mex references and citing a Harris Poll in which guac edges out salsa in the chip dip category, Glidden said the zesty “Guacamole” paint color would be its pick.

“We’ve all saved beautiful green kitchens and earthyinspired bedrooms on our Pinterest boards and TikToks over the past year and a half, driven by our need for calm, regrowth and rejuvenation after living through these ‘unprecedented times,’ ” said Kim Perry, Glidden paint color expert.

Meanwhile, Behr Paint Co. — a brand sold at Home Depot stores — declared that “Breezeway,” a silvery shade of pale green, was its Color of the Year for 2022.

While Glidden stuck with an earthy fruit, Behr went with a coastal sea glass inspiration, as Americans pine for fresh air after a tumultuous couple of years filled with political discord and the coronavirus pandemic.

“A new year brings the opportunity to embrace a sense of renewal and pursue untapped passions,” said Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr. “‘Breezeway’ inspires us to fully embrace the hobbies or adventures, both near and far, that excite us. We look forward to a color that welcomes a hopeful sense of renewal, restoration and healing.”

Sometimes paint and color companies pick dramatically different hues, but in recent years, the trends have been obvious.

The color picks may affect what you find on the runway or in furniture upholstery and décor, but they also speak to the mood of the country.

Calling “Olive Sprig” their “hero color,” PPG senior color marketing manager Amy Donato said, “Our theme is ‘Horizon,’ that better days are ahead and new things are coming. Some of us are optimistic about the future, and everyone is aiming for a better destiny beyond the horizon.”
