Magnolia West, Alvin keep on rolling
When Ben McGehee first took the reins at Magnolia West in February, he was excited about continuing the winning tradition the program had already established.
His tenure only includes five games at this point. But, so far, so good.
The Mustangs improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in District 8-5A Division I play on Friday evening with a decisive 42-6 victory over Caney Creek at Moorhead Stadium in Conroe.
Magnolia West, which entered the contest as the No. 5 team in the Class 5A Houston area rankings, now has six consecutive wins against Caney Creek dating back to 2009. The Mustangs have scored at least 40 points in five straight matchups with the Panthers, including a 97-0 victory last year.
Magnolia West has been led by a high-powered rushing attack that entered the night averaging more than 241 yards per game and 6.7 yards per carry. Senior Hunter Bilbo reached the end zone three times against Caney Creek, giving him eight rushing touchdowns this season.
No. 11 Dickinson tops No. 12 Clear Falls
Dickinson started its quest for the District 24-6A title on the right foot with a 28-7 victory over Clear Falls on Friday night at Challenger Columbia Stadium.
The No. 11 area-ranked Gators (3-2, 1-0) broke the game open by scoring 21 points in the second quarter. Dickinson held the No. 12 Knights (4-1, 0-1) to less than 200 total yards.
Offensively, the Gators were led by Reggie Sanders, who had 109 rushing yards and a touchdown. Luke Martin had two rushing scores and connected with De’Rion Crooms on a 43-yard TD.
St. Thomas extends district win streak
St. Thomas has its sights set on another district championship.
The Eagles earned a 42-10 home victory over St. John XXIII on Friday night at Granger Stadium, extending the program’s district winning streak to 15 games.
St. Thomas (3-1, 1-0), the No. 3 team in the private school area rankings, is two weeks removed from its lone loss against No. 1 Kinkaid. Since that contest, the Eagles have won two games by a combined score of 84-10. The team has scored at least 35 points in every game this season.
Quarterback Jake Wright led the way for the Eagles on Friday with five touchdown passes, giving him 17 for the season. He entered the game with more than 1,300 passing yards.
Scott, Gutierrez help Alvin take down Elsik
Alvin maintained its earlyseason momentum Friday night with a 36-20 victory over Elsik at Crump Stadium in the District 23-6A opener for both teams.
Daniel Blume and DeyShawn Peterson each had a rushing touchdown for the Yellowjackets (3-1, 1-0), and Jamel Scott finished with seven catches for 120 yards and a score.
Giovanni Gutierrez returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown to lead the defensive efforts.
Bridgeland thumps Langham Creek
No. 3 area-ranked Bridgeland took care of business in its District 16-6A opener Friday night, rolling to a 48-16 victory over Langham Creek at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.
Quarterback Conner Weigman passed for 344 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed for 94 yards and another two scores. Graham Gillespie had an interception return for a touchdown.
North Shore cruises past West Brook
No. 6 North Shore looked polished during its District 21-6A opener against Beaumont West Brook on Friday, rolling to a 44-7 victory on the road.
Quarterback Wyndell Mitchell had another big game, passing for 265 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for two scores. David Amador had six catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Thursday notes
• Dobie outdueled Channelview in a shootout Thursday at Pasadena Veterans Memorial Stadium, winning 55-49 to open District 22-6A competition. The two teams combined for 1,206 yards of total offense, including 652 for Channelview (2-3, 0-1) and 554 for the Longhorns (4-1, 1-0).
Dobie was led by its rushing attack, which featured standout performances from Trajan Davis (127 yards, 2 TDs), Cameron Gray (94 yards, 2 TDs, Terrand Booker (104 yards, 3 TDs) and Reynard Hall (152 yards). Channelview was led by quarterback Demetrias Charles, who completed 23 of 37 passes for 345 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 200 yards and two more scores.
• Clear Springs capped its non-district schedule with a 64-27 rout against Conroe on Thursday evening at Challenger Columbia Stadium. Quarterback Cody Kuhlmann passed for 316 yards and five touchdowns, and Noah Thomas had five catches for 116 yards and three scores. The Chargers (2-2) piled up 650 yards of total offense against the Tigers (2-3), including 334 on the ground.
• Angleton remained unbeaten with a 48-13 win over B.F. Terry in District 10-5A Division action Thursday night at Traylor Stadium.
Kariyen Goins had a big game for the Wildcats (5-0, 3-0) with 10 catches for 157 yards and a touchdown, and Jordan Pickett had a pair of scoring grabs. Goins also had an interception for the Angleton defense, which limited Terry (1-4, 0-3) to 169 total yards.
