Brewers clinch NL Central title

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers clinched their second NL Central title in four years, beating the New York Mets 8-4 on Sunday behind Willy Adames’s two-run homer and three RBIs.

Josh Hader pitched a perfect ninth inning, retiring Brandon Nimmo on a game-ending flyout to left fielder Christian Yelich and sending the Brewers running onto the field to celebrate as the crowd of 43,430 erupted into cheers. The Brewers are 94-62, winning 90-plus games for the ninth time in franchise history.

YANKEES 6, RED SOX 3: Twice given new life after Boston fielders dropped foul balls that would have ended his eighth-inning at-bat, Aaron Judge doubled in the go-ahead runs to lead New York to a victory and a wildcard flipping three-game sweep at Fenway Park. Giancarlo Stanton followed with a two-run homer over the Green Monster and out of the ballpark to give the Yankees their sixth straight victory. The Yankees, who arrived in Boston trailing the Red Sox by two games, leave it with a one-game lead in the race to host the Oct. 5 AL wild-card game. Boston remains in playoff position, one game ahead of Toronto for the second wild-card spot.

CARDINALS 4, CUBS 2: Andrew Knizner scored the go-ahead run on Codi Heuer’s wild pitch in the ninth inning, and St. Louis won at Chicago for its franchiser­ecord 16th straight victory.

GIANTS 6, ROCKIES 2: Brandon Crawford homered to cap a four-run ninth inning, and San Francisco won at Colorado to hold its lead in the NL West.

DODGERS 3, DIAMONDBAC­KS 0: Corey Seager hit two solo homers, Julio Urias posted his MLB-leading 19th victory, and Los Angeles won its 100th game of the season by beating host Arizona.

BRAVES 4, PADRES 3: Will Smith struck out the side around three walks in the ninth inning to finish Atlanta’s win at San Diego that opened a 2½-game lead over Philadelph­ia heading into their NL East showdown.

PIRATES 6, PHILLIES 0: Phillies starter Hans Crouse gave up a home run to Cole Tucker on his first major league pitch, and Philadelph­ia’s playoff hopes took a hit with a loss to visiting Pittsburgh.

RAYS 3, MARLINS 2: Rookie Shane Baz pitched 52⁄3 scoreless innings to win his second straight start, and AL East champion Tampa Bay beat visiting Miami for its team-record 14th series sweep.

REDS 9, NATIONALS 2: Tyler Stephenson and Nick Castellano­s hit consecutiv­e homers, and host Cincinnati kept alive its slim playoff hopes by routing Washington.

MARINERS 5, ANGELS 1: Shohei Ohtani allowed Jarred Kelenic’s tying homer in the seventh, and Mitch Haniger hit a go-ahead single in a four-run eighth against the bullpen that lifted Seattle over host Los Angeles.

BLUE JAYS 5, TWINS 2: Danny Jansen hit a go-ahead, three-run homer, George Springer also went deep, and Toronto won at Minnesota to maintain pressure in the AL wild-card race.

WHITE SOX 5, INDIANS 2: Lucas Giolito pitched six scoreless innings, Eloy Jimenez had a two-run single, and AL Central champion Chicago won at Cleveland.

RANGERS 7, ORIOLES 4: Andy Ibanez hit a two-run homer, and Texas avoided its 100th loss for at least a day by winning at Baltimore.

ROYALS 2, TIGERS 1: Kris Bubic kept up his mastery of the Tigers, pitching seven shutout innings and leading Kansas City over host Detroit.
