HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Boys
Marxquise Hayes, Soph., Willowridge Notable: Hayes had three catches for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns during the Eagles’ 21-20 overtime victory against Sharpstown on Saturday. The sophomore scored on catches from 69 and 23 yards out, the latter coming in overtime. He also had an interception. It marked the second straight game Hayes recorded an interception and a touchdown catch.
What coach Ramon Chin-Young said: “Marxquise Hayes is an excellent young man and a scholarathlete. He is a returning letterman for us and started as a true freshman last year. The past two games, he has been a clutch player on both sides of the football.”
Other nominees
Demetrias Charles, Sr., Channelview: Charles completed 23 of 37 passes for 345 yards and five touchdowns during a 55-49 loss to Dobie on Friday. He also rushed for 200 yards and two more scores.
Kariyen Goins, Jr., Angleton: Goins collected 10 catches for 157 yards and a touchdown for the unbeaten Wildcats during a 48-13 victory over Terry on Friday. He also had an interception.
Jonathan Rivera, Sr., Sam Rayburn: Rivera won the Dobie High School Longhorn Stampede on Saturday, capturing the 5,000-meter Division I race with a time of 15 minutes, 36.44 seconds.
Girls
Reagan Whatley, Sr., The Woodlands Notable: Whatley had a pair of strong performances to kick off District 13-6A action, starting with 13 kills during a sweep over Willis on Tuesday. The senior outside hitter followed that up with 22 kills during a five-set victory over crosstown rival Oak Ridge.
What coach Terri Wade said: “Reagan has stepped up her game in the last week. Her leadership and determination have turned on since starting district. It’s another phase of the season, and I know she wants to meet her goals and be her best in her senior year at The Woodlands.”
Other nominees
Marianna Buchanan, Soph., Cypress Falls: Buchanan helped the Golden Eagles to District 16-6A wins over Cypress Springs and Cypress Lakes. She collected 27 kills, 20 digs, five aces and two blocks in those matches.
Madison Haldiman, Jr., George Ranch: Haldiman took first place at the Kempner Cougar Classic on Saturday, completing the 5,000-meter course with a time of 18 minutes, 30.80 seconds.
Reaghan Thompson, Sr., Clear Creek: Thompson helped the Wildcats earn District 24-6A victories over Clear Springs and Clear Lake with 36 kills, 10 blocks and eight digs.
