CELEBRATION OF LIFE Irene Marie Zapalac Hundl

July 16, 1927 – October 2, 2021 Irene Marie Zapalac Hundl of Houston went home to be with our Lord on October 2, 2021, at the age of 94. She was born in Frydek, Texas, on July 16, 1927, the daughter of Edward and Vera Zapalac. Irene graduated from Jefferson Davis High School. She married the love of her life, Joseph (Joe) A. Hundl, Sr., on January 13, 1946. They were married for 61 years and were blessed with six children: Joseph Jr., Duane, Candice, Renette, Dorian and Wesley. They were also blessed with 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Irene was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed.

Irene and Joe lived their faith daily. They were active members of Holy Name Catholic Church for many years. Joe was an usher and Irene was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Altar Society. For Irene and Joe, faith and family were of the utmost importance. Irene raised her family in a faith filled environment where prayer, attending Mass and attending the Stations of the Cross during Lent were done as a family. Irene was a devoted wife and mother who would do anything for her children. She loved being involved with her children’s activities. She was a leader in the Holy Name Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), was a den mother for the Cub Scouts, and was a teacher at her children’s grade school, Holy Name Catholic School. Irene was ambitious and full of energy, and while raising her children, she attended South Texas Junior College and earned her Associate’s Degree. She later worked as a secretary for the Texas Nurse’s Association for several years.

One of Irene’s greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren who have many fond memories of their special time with Mammaw. They always brought a big smile to her face. Irene loved family gatherings such as holidays or birthdays when all the family would get together and just enjoy being with each other. She also enjoyed the cake and ice cream.

Irene loved being of service to others. In 1988 she was a chartered guild member of Wellsprings Village with Sister Rita Owens and Sister Justin Farinella. She was also very involved with the Catholic Daughter’s Court #1750, Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary #2917 and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW). She was President of the GalvestonHouston DCCW/ACCW from 1999 to 2001. She was also a member of S.P.J.S.T. Lodge #88.

Irene loved to have fun and to travel. Irene and Joe went polka dancing on weekends with their many friends. They played Czech music on the radio at home teaching their children the joy of polka dancing. After raising their children, Irene and Joe traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Medjugorje, Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia, Germany, and Holland.

Irene was a very prayerful, loving, humble, and kind person. She believed in the power of prayer and giving thanks to God for all her blessings. One of her favorite prayers was the Guardian Angel prayer which she prayed many times each day. Irene passed away on The Feast of the Guardian Angels.
