Mutin sidelined in concussion protocol
University of Houston linebacker Donavan Mutin is in concussion protocol following the tackle that sent him to the hospital in Friday’s game against Memphis.
At his weekly press conference, coach Dana Holgorsen said Mutin has been around the program the past few days but is not cleared to resume football activities.
Holgorsen declined to discuss specifics of Mutin’s condition, only to say: “He’s good.”
“I’m just happy the young man is OK,” Holgorsen added.
Mutin, a junior team captain and the Cougars’ leading tackler, was hurt on the opening drive Friday when he appeared to take a knee to the helmet as he made a tackle. He briefly remained motionless, according to Holgorsen, but quickly regained movement in his arms and legs.
He was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and was discharged late Friday night.
In a statement Saturday, UH said Mutin was “up and walking” and “remains in good spirits.”
McCaskill expected to play against UConn
Running back Alton McCaskill is day-to-day with a stinger but is expected to play in Saturday’s regular-season finale at Connecticut.
McCaskill, who has 15 rushing touchdowns, did not play in the second half against Memphis.
CB Jones awarded another AAC honor
Cornerback Marcus Jones was named the American Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, marking his fifth weekly award this season.
Against Memphis, Jones became the second player in AAC history to record at least two interceptions and at least three pass breakups in a game. A finalist for the Paul Hornung Award, presented to the nation’s most versatile player, Jones has five interceptions in the last four games. He also has four kick returns for touchdowns this season.
Jones has six career AAC weekly honors, the most for any defensive or special teams player and second only to Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder (seven). Previously, Jones was named the league’s special teams player of the week four times this season.
