Hall’s record day powers Cyclones

- By Andrew Logue

AMES, Iowa — Breece Hall rushed for 242 yards and scored four touchdowns Friday night in what maybe his final game at Jack Trice Stadium, propelling Iowa State to 48-14 win over Texas Christian and setting an NCAA FBS record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown.

Hall darted 39 yards for a score in the second quarter, giving him 24 consecutive games with at least one rushing touchdown. He shared the record with Bill Burnett, who scored a rushing TD in 23 straight games for Arkansas (1968-70).

Hall, a junior who could be a high pick in next spring’s NFL draft, is the Cyclones all-time career scoring leader with 336 points and 56 touchdowns.

“Those are special things for a special player,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “And Breece is a special player.”

Hall highlighted his dominance against TCU with an 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter Friday, putting Iowa State (7-5, 5-4 Big 12) ahead 34-7.

His fourth touchdown came on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. Hall carried the ball 18 times (averaging 13.4 yards per rush) and caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.

Afterward, Hall describe the night as a fairy tale.

“It just really showed the hard work, myself and my team, put in,” Hall said.

TCU (5-7, 3-6) gave up a total of 279 rushing yards.

Campbell shed a few tears during a pregame tribute for 23 seniors, and that emotion seemed to help Iowa State jump to an early lead.

“It’s a group that’s blazed a trail that’s really powerful,” Campbell said.

After driving for a field goal on the game’s opening possession, the Cyclones went up 10-0 when Jirehl Brock ran 40 yards for a touchdown.

Hall’s record-setting touchdown extended the margin to 17-0 in the second.

Dykes expected to be next coach

All signs continue to point toward SMU coach Sonny Dykes becoming Gary Patterson’s successor at TCU, sources said, but nothing is expected to be formally announced on TCU’s end until Monday at the earliest. A 247Sports report Friday said that Dykes would be named TCU’s next coach, and other outlets confirmed the much-anticipated move.

TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati declined to comment when approached about the report by the Star-Telegram at the Iowa State-TCU game Friday in Ames, but this hire has been expected for the last week.

The length of the contract and financial terms have not been disclosed, but SMU reportedly offered a package of up to $4 million annually. TCU’s is significantly more.

Patterson ranked among the top 10 highest-paid coaches with an annual salary nearing $6 million.
