Ohio St. stuns Duke with deep freeze

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Zed Key scored a career-high 20 points and Ohio State held top-ranked Duke scoreless for the final 4½ minutes, completing a rally from a 15-point second-half deficit to beat the Blue Devils 71-66 on Tuesday night.

E.J. Liddell hit two free throws with 1:06 remaining to give the Buckeyes (5-2) their first lead since early in the first half, and his jumper made it 69-66 with 16 seconds left. Duke freshman star Paolo Banchero missed a tying 3-pointer, and Cedric Russell got the rebound and closed it out at the free-throw line. Ohio State fans stormed the court as time expired.

The Blue Devils (7-1) claimed the top spot in this week’s AP Top 25 poll — a stay that could be brief — after beating then-No. 1 Gonzaga in Las Vegas. Ohio State improved to 2-1 against ranked foes this year with its fourth straight game decided in the final minutes.

Liddell finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for Ohio State, which beat the No. 1 team in the country for the second straight time on its home court. The Buckeyes knocked off Michigan State 80-64 on Jan. 7, 2018.

Wendell Moore Jr. led Duke with 17 points and Banchero finished with 14.

The Blue Devils missed their last six shots as the Buckeyes closed the game with a 12-0 run. Duke endured a 1-for-14 stretch earlier in the half, allowing the Buckeyes to draw closer.

NO. 2 PURDUE 93 FLORIDA STATE 65

Jaden Ivey scored 18 points and matched his career high with four 3pointers, Brandon Newman added 13 points, and the host Boilermake­rs pulled away from the Seminoles in the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge.

Purdue has won seven straight home games in the annual clash between the conference­s.

The Boilermake­rs are also 7-0 for the first time since 2015-16 and the seventh time since 1940.

Florida State (5-2) was led by Caleb Mills with 22 points as its four-game winning streak ended. The Seminoles were missing three players, including two starters.

TEXAS STATE 80, RICE 69

The Owls squandered a 12-point halftime lead with a disastrous second half in a loss to the Bobcats at Tudor Fieldhouse.

After building a 38-26 lead in the first 20 minutes, Rice fell apart on both ends while being outscored 54-31 in the second half. The Owls allowed the Bobcats to shoot 59.3 percent from the field in the half and gave up 19 points off turnovers. For the game, Rice had 17 turnovers to just eight for Texas State.

Carl Pierre had 16 points for Rice (4-4). Quincy Olivari added 14 points and Travis Evee 13.

Mason Harrell scored 24 points for Texas State (5-2), which earned its fourth consecutiv­e victory.

TEXAS A&M 85 NEW ORLEANS 65

Andre Gordon scored 15 points to lead five in double figures as the Aggies defeated the Privateers at College Station.

The Aggies also got 13 points from Tyrece Radford, 11 each from Hassan Diarra and Wade Taylor IV, and 10 from Marcus Williams.

A&M (7-1) led 21-15 when Taylor was fouled on a 3-pointer that missed. He made all three free throws to start a 14-2 run over the next six minutes.

Derek St. Hilaire led the Privateers (3-5) with 20 points.

A&M’s Quenton Jackson, the SEC player of the week after averaging 16 points in three games at the Maui Invitation­al in Las Vegas, scored five points and played only 16 minutes.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 99 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 90

William Douglas scored a career-high 24 points for the Panthers, but it couldn’t prevent their eighth consecutiv­e road loss to start the season.

Jawaun Daniels and Markedric Bell added 12 points each for Prairie View.

Noah Freidel had 21 points for South Dakota State (7-2).

Sarah Andrews scored 20 points, Queen Egbo and NaLyssa Smith each had a double-double and in the Bears’ victory.

Baylor (7-1) held Morehead State to 20 percent shooting in their 64th consecutiv­e nonconfere­nce home victory.
