2. ‘The Snowy Day’

Ezra Jack Keats’ “The Snowy Day” was noted upon its publication for being the first mainstream children’s book to feature a Black boy as protagonist. The story clearly resonated, as the book remains a beloved holiday seller nearly 60 years later. The story has now been adapted in a new operatic form, with music by Joel Thompson and libretto by Andrea Davis Pinkney. Houston Grand Opera brings this telling to town with HGO Studio artist Raven McMillon taking on the role of Peter.

Disney film more than a century later. More recently, it was adapted into a popular musical, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and book by Doug Wright.
