DORIS NAGAR-HARRIS

1933-2021

-

Doris Nagar-Harris, our beloved mother, age 88, passed away peacefully, in the presence of loved ones, on Tuesday the 7th of December 2021. She was a loving daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and aunt. Doris was born in Houston, Texas on February 1, 1933. She was part of a very close-knit family, with six sisters and one brother.

As a divorcee in the 60’s, Doris was a trailblazer as a single-parent mother. Despite the challenges facing a single-parent woman in those days, she ensured that her children were well provided for. She worked tirelessly to provide a nurturing and comfortable environment for her children. Whether it was selling Tupperware and Avon products, or clipping coupons, there was always food on the table and a roof overhead. Doris instilled the value of family in her children.

Doris also worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for 20 years in the physical therapy department. She always kept a supply of small toys and candy for the children who were dealing with health issues at the hospital. Upon her retirement, her going away party had well over 100 coworkers to see her off. She was loved for her bubbly personality, and always had a smile for old or new friends.

The most important thing to Doris was her family. She made it her mission to visit as many sisters as she could every week. She loved her family, and it was not uncommon for her to take her children, nieces and nephews shopping, to the movies, or to play miniature golf on the weekends.

Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerry Harris, her parents, Sadie and Joseph Nagar, her sisters and brother and their spouses: Helen and Melvin Tapick, Gloria and George Frederick, Rena and Jerry Schwartz, Lynn and Sol Schnitzer, Adele and Macky Schnitzer, Sidney and Mickey Nagar, and Aaron Schneider. She is survived by her children, Ron Mock and Vicki Cook, her grandchildren, Joel Steele (Suzanne), Heather Steele-Zamarano (Jesus), Casey Steele-Wisneski (Matt), Brendan Cook, and Mackenzie Cook. Doris was elated to meet her first great-grandchild, Frankie Steele-Zamarano, prior to her passing. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Schneider, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Emanu El Memorial Park. Her family would like to thank her caregivers, Juanita Brown, Vera Brown, and Sierra Reed for the warm and compassionate care they provided. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Doris’ memory to Congregation Emanu El, Seven Acres Jewish Care Services, or the charity of your choice.
