Top quarterback picks Longhorns

- STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

AUSTIN — Bleached mullets usually won’t make anyone bat an eye in Austin. But this weekend, Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers and his feathery blonde lettuce had everyone’s attention.

Texas had gone all-in on recruiting the former Southlake Carroll five-star quarterback ever since Dec. 3, when he decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal after one season with the Buckeyes. The Longhorns’ push included an in-home visit from coach Steve Sarkisian on Monday and a highly anticipated trip to the Forty Acres Saturday alongside numerous recruits.

The pitch seemed to work well enough, because Ewers on Sunday informed Sarkisian that he plans to sign with Texas and enroll in January. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Ewers initially committed to Texas in August 2020. That didn’t stick, and he eventually reclassified as a 2021 graduate in order to enroll at Ohio State back in August.

Stuck behind Heisman Trophy finalist C.J. Stroud and others on the depth chart, Ewers appeared in one game at Ohio State and did not attempt a pass.

Ewers led Southlake Carroll to the 6A Division I state championship game as a junior. In eight games that season he threw for 2,442 yards with 28 touchdowns and five interceptions.

The addition of Ewers’ jumped Texas’ 2022 signing class from No. 7 to No. 5 in the nation, per the 247Sports composite rankings.

Nick Moyle Auburn quarterback Nix to transfer: Auburn quarterback Bo Nix said in a video posted to Instagram on Sunday that he plans to leave Auburn as a graduate transfer. Nix didn’t name any potential destinations.

The former five-star recruit started the first 34 games of his career before a season-ending ankle injury
