’Tis the season of giving

-

While the month of December tends to put a spotlight on the spirit of giving, the gestures of goodwill and generosity are a year-long affair for residents and team members at The Buckingham, a premier Life Care retirement community in Houston.

In 2005, the community established The Buckingham Foundation, a 501(c) (3) designed to raise money and distribute it to those in need. Today, The foundation is managed by a board of directors consisting of residents who determine how and when funds are distributed.

The primary beneficiaries are the people who work at the community.

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we had several staff members who were suffering and finding it tough to get back to normal,” said Penny Bryant, a resident and board member of The Buckingham Foundation. “So, we decided there was no better way to use these funds than to help those who every day help provide a great experience and deliver quality care for us here at The Buckingham.”

The foundation typically distributes grant money in three ways: 1) team members apply for funds due to a hardship; 2) team members apply for a scholarship to support higher education needs; and 3) grants are given to nonprofit citizen organizations in the Houston area, such as the Alzheimer’s Association or the Parkinson’s Foundation.

“The Buckingham community is one big family,” said Bryant. “We have a very generous and caring culture here. It’s a special place to live and work.”
