No. 13 Michigan surprises No. 5 Baylor

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Leigha Brown scored 25 points to lead No. 13 Michigan to a 74-68 win over fifth-ranked Baylor in the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase on Sunday.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet we beat a top-five team,” Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico said. “It’s a great signature win.”

Leading 66-65 in OT, Emily Kiser made two free throws and Brown added a jumper that gave the Wolverines (11-1) a five-point lead with 1:23 left.

Baylor (9-2) got within 70-68 and after a turnover had a chance to tie it, but NaLyssa Smith missed a drive down the lane with 15 seconds left.

Maddie Nolan converted two free throws with 11.7 seconds left to seal the win.

Aliyah Matharu scored 22 points and DeYona Gaston notched her first double-double of the season to lead the Longhorns over the Wildcats at Las Vegas.

Texas (8-1) was supposed to play No. 4 Arizona (10-0) as part of the Coast-to-Coast Challenge, but the Wildcats were forced to pull out due to COVID-19 protocols and contact tracing within the Wildcats’ program. San Diego volunteere­d to step in and play the Longhorns.

Lexi Donarski scored 26 points, Ashley Joens had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Emily Ryan contribute­d 12 points and 15 assists as the host Cyclones crushed the Panthers.

Hailey Van Lith scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and the Cardinals outlasted the Huskies at Uncasville, Conn.

Carlie Littlefiel­d scored 22 points, Deja Kelly added 19, including the last four in a game-closing 10-0 run as the Tar Heels rallied for a win over the Eagles at Boston.

Rhyne Howard scored 13 of her 18 points in a 17-0 third-quarter run as the Wildcats prevailed at home.

Caleb Grill and Izaiah Brockingto­n combined for 37 points and the Cyclones pulled away from the Lions at Ames, Iowa, to remain unbeaten.

USC MEN’S SEASON PLACED ON HOLD

USC’s sensationa­l start to the hoops season is officially on hold amid an outbreak of COVID-19 within its own program.

The unbeaten Trojans’ final road trip of the nonconfere­nce season was cut short Sunday, as they were forced to cancel a Tuesday game with Oklahoma State and pause all team activities due to several confirmed positive cases.

The men’s game scheduled for Tuesday between No. 15 Ohio State and Tennessee-Martin was also canceled due to COVID.
