San Diego St. denies UTSA

- STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

FRISCO — UTSA will have to wait at least one more season for the first bowl victory in program history, as a year of historic accomplishments closed with a 38-24 loss to No. 24 San Diego State in the Frisco Bowl on Tuesday at Toyota Stadium.

The shorthanded Roadrunners struggled to contain Aztecs quarterback Lucas Johnson, who threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns, crushing his previous career high of 220 passing yards.

Receiver Jesse Matthews did the bulk of the damage, torching the UTSA secondary for 11 catches, 175 yards and two touchdowns.

UTSA’s Frank Harris threw for 271 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, but the Roadrunners were held to 1 of 9 third-down conversion attempts and went 1 of 3 on fourth down, keeping the offense from reaching full throttle.

With Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Sincere McCormick sitting out to prepare for the NFL Draft, Brenden Brady ran 16 times for 76 yards and a touchdown, while BJ Daniels carried three times for 38 yards.

The game was chippy on both sides, as San Diego State was flagged 14 times for 124 yards and UTSA was penalized nine times for 80 yards. Greg Luca

WYOMING 52 KENT STATE 38

In Boise, Idaho, Wyoming quarterback Levi Williams rushed for 200 yards as the Cowboys won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Aside from Williams’ yardage record, the MVP’s touchdowns rushing also tied a Potato Bowl record. Through the air, he passed for 127 yards and another touchdown.

Kent State (7-7), playing in its fifth bowl game in school history, raced out to a 17-7 lead and held a 24-21 advantage at halftime, but the Golden Flashes couldn’t hold up against Wyoming’s relentless rushing attack.

Wyoming (7-6) scored 21 consecutive points to start the second half, including scoring runs of 27 and 80 yards by Williams, to build a 42-24 lead that proved to be too much for Kent State to overcome.
