South Carolina edges Stanford

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Aliyah Boston didn’t miss this time, her layup with 1:05 to go giving No. 1 South Carolina a 65-61 victory over No. 2 Stanford on Tuesday night.

She finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, her fifth straight double double and 36th of her career.

It was Boston who couldn’t convert last April at the Final Four in the closing seconds to send the Cardinal to a 66-65 victory en route to the national championsh­ip.

This time, the 6-5 AllAmerica­n set herself up down low, got the ball from Destanni Henderson and put it in for the winning basket as the Gamecocks (12-0) rallied from 18 points down in the first half for the biggest comeback in school history.

Lexie Hull led Stanford (8-3) with 17 points, just three of those coming in the final three quarters.

Khayla Pointer had 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and the Tigers beat the shorthande­d Red Raiders for their 10th straight victory in the West Palm Beach (Fla.) Invitation­al.

Rhyle McKinney scored 14 points for Tech (7-4), which was missing leading scorer Vivian Gray for an undisclose­d reason.

Rachel McLimore scored 12 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, including the winning free throws with three seconds left, as the Jaguars ovecame a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Hawkeyes at Iowa City.

Tatyana Hill had 15 points and nine rebounds as the Cougars (7-5) beat the Islanders at Fertitta Center for their fifth consecutiv­e victory.

Men TEXAS A&M 80 NORTHWESTE­RN STATE 61

Freshman Manny Obaseki had 19 points and nine rebounds — both season highs — and the Aggies never trailed in winning at College Station.

Hassan Diarra added 12 points and Tyrece Radford scored 10 on 5-of-6 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds for A&M (9-2).

DAVIDSON 79 NO. 10 ALABAMA 78

Luka Brajkovic scored 22 points and made a late 3-pointer and Michael Jones scored 21 points to help the Wildcats beat the Crimson Tide in a game at Birmingham that replaced canceled contests.

Alabama scored the final nine points in a bid to erase a deficit that was as big as 13 in the second half.

NO. 23 VILLANOVA 71 NO. 18 XAVIER 58

Justin Moore scored 12 of his 17 points after halftime and Caleb Daniels added 16 points to lead the host Wildcats past the Musketeers.

Collin Gillespie and Eric Dixon each had 15 points for Villanova, which bounced back from consecutiv­e blowout losses to Baylor and Creighton.

HBU LOSES GAMES

Tuesday's men's game between Houston Baptist and Florida Internatio­nal in Miami was canceled due to health protocols.

HBU’s women’s game at Baylor on Dec. 29 was canceled due to protocols in the Huskies’ program.

Elsewhere, Georgetown and Boston College suffered forfeits in their conference standings due to the cancellati­on of games Wednesday against No. 22 Providence and Wake Forest, respective­ly.

No. 7 Kansas at Colorado was among the games canceled Tuesday.
