Aggies don’t quit
Regarding “Texas A&M won't play in Gator Bowl due to COVID-19 outbreak,” (Dec. 22):
Coach Jimbo Fisher should have walked over to the Corps of Cadets Quad, grabbed the first 12 cadets he found, suited them up, and brought them to the game. Coach, at the Aggie Bonfire Memorial there is a poem inscribed on the wall, “The Last Corps Trip,” one verse follows.
“I’ve seen them play since way back when and they’ve always had the grit.
“I’ve seen ’em lose, and I’ve seen ’em win, but I’ve never seen ’em quit.”
A lot of Aggie fans were looking forward to that game. Coach Fisher, if you’re going to play in Texas, you gotta have a … little more grit.

Keep building the wall
Regarding “Opinion: Building the wall back better,” (Dec. 23): Since Gov. Greg Abbott seems to be the only elected official
working on border security and desires to complete the wall, I suggest we use the materials already paid for by the American
taxpayers that sit idle after President Joe Biden canceled contracts last January. After all, what’s the worst that could happen, the federal government sues Texas? I don’t think we need to worry too much that Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris want to come here anytime soon to check on progress. I say go for it and keep building while the issue is tied up in court.

Wasted tax money
Regarding “Unfair Burden”: I just want to compliment the Houston Chronicle on doing an outstanding job on bringing to light the tax exemptions being given in Texas. The tax laws chapters 380 and 381 appear to be giving tax credits far in excess of the potential benefits to the state or cities. The tax exemptions given to parsonages is also being abused, as you reveal. Maybe the laws should impose maximum limitations on the amount of the exemptions. I also give you kudos for identifying the money wasted on searching for voter fraud, for building the southern wall and miscellaneous assignment of the Texas National Guard to patrol the border or even monitor the U.S. Army training exercises in Texas for a potential invasion of Texas. How much money can we waste here? Ralph Pulis, Katy
