JANET HARPER ANDERSON

June 11, 1923 - June 11, 2022

-

Janet Harper Anderson, 99, of Houston, Texas, went home to be with her Savior on June 11, 2022. Although her passing was sudden, she was surrounded by her loved ones earlier in the day.

Jan was born in Indiana, PA on June 11, 1923. She was the first of four children born to Scottish immigrant parents, George and Marion Harper. Jan was a proud firstgeneration American who never forgot her roots in a coal mining town in southwestern Pennsylvania.

She met the love of her life, then US Army Air Corps Captain, Arnold “Swede” Anderson during World War II. They married when Swede returned home from Europe at the conclusion of the war.

They had 3 sons whom they raised in Oakmont, PA, Westfield, NJ (Swede worked 15 miles away in mid-town Manhattan), and Houston, TX. Jan was a great “boys mom” and their home was filled with laughter as she and Swede worked hard to raise their boys. Academics were stressed but there were also endless classes in piano, tennis, golf, and swimming as well as the boys’ multiple sports and school activities. Jan was an excellent cook and baker. Family dinner, always made from scratch, involved all 5 Andersons sitting around a table even in the busiest of times. The food was great; the conversations lively.

Jan had many interests ranging from travel to golf but her life was defined by her love of Jesus and family. Church was an integral part of her family’s life. She volunteered in many church activities but she truly loved teaching children about Jesus. She taught Sunday school for over 50 years. Jan and Swede were active members of Bethel Independent Presbyterian Church in Houston.

Jan was proceeded in death by her husband of 54 years.

She was also predeceased by her brothers Robert and Andrew.

Jan is survived by her 3 sons--Doug, of Leiden, the Netherlands, Ken and wife Martha of Round Rock, TX and Gregg and wife Ana of Houston; 5 grandchildren-Jennie Anderson Jonmaire and husband Kasey, Taylor Anderson Galloway and husband Garrett, Kelsey Anderson Tekell and husband Christian, Daniel Anderson and wife Jaymie and Karl Anderson; and 6 great grandchildren--Trey, Jack and Sloane Jonmaire, Aiden Galloway, Lilly Tekell and Lucas Anderson. She is also survived by her younger sister, Dorothy, of Verona, PA.

Jan will be laid to rest next to her husband at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston. A graveside service will be held at 9am on Friday, June 17th.
