Man killed by HPD in Sharpstown brawl
Police shot and killed a man who on Wednesday attacked an elderly couple and brawled with their neighbor inside a Sharpstown home, according to authorities.
Emergency calls of a man in distress along Bissonnet Street preceded the fatal clash, which unfolded around 11:30 a.m. in the nearby 6700 block of Langdon Lane, according to police.
A neighbor reported that a man covered in blood and acting erratically knocked on his door screaming someone was chasing and trying to kill him. The man failed to get inside and went to the door of the next home, which was unlocked. He entered and encountered an elderly couple.
The wife called police and reported that her husband was fighting with a man armed with a knife inside their home.
During the clash, another neighbor came over with a gun to help. Officers soon arrived and the wife, who by then had someone's blood on her, screamed at them to hurry inside.
The officers heard screaming from a bedroom and encountered the husband as he escaped. The armed man, while continuing to fight the neighbor, managed to get his hands on a firearm. The officers saw the weapon and opened fire.
He continued to reach for the gun and the officers fired again, killing him.
Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite expressed confidence that the man from the 911 calls is the same individual who entered the home. The man, believed to be in his 20s, was not identified.
The five officers — a lieutenant, two sergeants and two officers — were put on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal review of the shooting. The Harris County District Attorney's Office will conduct its own investigation into the shooting.
The neighbor who came to help was hospitalized with an unspecified leg injury.
The death marked the ninth killing in 2022 at the hands of a Houston police officer, according to HPD statistics.
