GOP’s platform

-

Regarding “Voting restrictions,” (July 7): Referencing Lindsay Norris’ spot-on comments in the July 7 letters , Norris has appropriately identified the definition of fascism. Apart from listing the numerous areas where this extreme GOP minority is dictating compliance with their restrictive social agenda despite the differing opinions of the majority of Texas voters, this embrace of fascism was on full display in June’s Texas Republican Party Convention. As reported in the Chronicle “party leaders are threatening GOP state lawmakers who control the Texas Legislature with increased sanctions if they don’t support the party platform, including potentially spending tens of thousands of dollars directly to oppose them in future primaries.”

I wonder if the rank-and-file GOP voters even know what is going on in their own party? We are all aware of the “Big Lie” and the Jan. 6 committee hearings have been enlightening. I applaud those Republicans who appeared for questioning before the committee and told the truth of what transpired after the 2020 election; they are true patriots. It’s pretty obvious that the only attempted thief of the 2020 election was Donald Trump, and that what occurred on Jan. 6 was, indeed, an insurrection and attempted coup.

As a (formerly) registered Republican I could not stomach voting for Donald Trump in 2016 or 2020. At this point with so many Republican candidates denying the “Big Lie” and pledging fealty to Donald Trump instead of to the U.S. Constitution and the people they are elected to represent, I wouldn’t vote for a Republican for dogcatcher.

It’s past time to vote these cowardly Republicans out of office starting at the lowest electoral levels. It’s not enough to forgo voting for candidates, we must vote for their opponents. It’s the only way to weed out this tendency toward fascism.

Regarding “Texas GOP pushes lawmakers to limit vote-by-mail for seniors and cut early voting period,” (July 1): Reading this article is very troubling. It seems that many Republicans in Texas want to further restrict the ability to vote for Texans. Reduce early voting, limit mail ballots for those over 65. When are we going to stand up and stop this extreme right-wing minority from running our state? The elected Republican representatives either agree with them or are so afraid of not being re-elected that they cringe at their every rant. They continue to refuse to accept the 2020 presidential election, and actually booed Sen. John Cornyn because he was working on a

bipartisan gun bill in Washington. These party leaders “have added the possibility of spending money against Republicans who interfere with their agenda.” For the life of me, I cannot understand how these people think. Their vision for this country is regressive and anti-American.

My Gen X older son has decided to sell his home in Houston and move out of the state or perhaps out of the country. He can no longer stand the politics. And he said that he will not remain in a state that hates his daughter. So what can I tell him? I’ve said that if his generation does not step up to change the direction of this country we will stay on this course. My generation has failed.

Time is running short. The invasion is not from across the southern border as these extremists contend, it is from within the borders. The enemy is us. Our democracy is under attack by our neighbors.
