A Montgomery County judge sentenced a Conroe man to 20 years in prison for shooting into an apartment where a woman and her four children were sleeping.

Gregory Henderson, 32, who was convicted of deadly conduct, will have to serve at least half of the sentence before he is eligible for parole due to previous felony convictions.

Judge Lisa Michalk of the 221st state District Court handed down the maximum sentence Wednesday after hearing his previous criminal history, which included shooting a man several times in Ohio.

Montgomery County First Assistant District Attorney Mike Holley said after a jury heard the evidence, Henderson asked the judge to issue the sentence.

According to court documents, during the early morning hours of Dec. 21, 2021, a woman was awakened by a hail of gunfire through her front door at the Tall Timbers apartment complex at 1101 South 7th St.

Conroe police located surveillance video that showed a maroon Lexus with at least two people pull into the complex parking lot, stop in front of the woman’s unit and open fire.

Holley said the video shows the flashes from the gun before the car fled the scene. No one was injured, he said.

Holley said detectives learned Henderson might be involved and obtained a search warrant for his home, where they located his phone. After a second search warrant, Holley said, detectives found messages on Henderson’s phone that showed he planned the attack.

The messages indicated Henderson had a previous altercation with the woman’s brother, Holley said.

Henderson’s attorney, Tim Rose, could not be reached for comment.
