Ellis Rushefsky, 92, passed away on February 7, 2023 in Houston, Texas. His life can be summarized by his commitment to his country, his work, his religion, and—most importantly—his family.

Ellis was born on May

14, 1930 in NYC to the late Morris and Irene (Schneider) Rushefsky. After graduating from Brooklyn Tech HS in NYC, he joined the Air Force.

The Air Force brought Ellis to Texas, and while stationed at Ellington Field, in the Houston area, he met the love of his life, Goldie Flanz. The two married in 1954 and went on to have three children together (Laura, Beryl, and Nancy). They were married just shy of 60 years at the time of Goldie’s passing.

During his years of military service, he was a Professor of Aerospace Studies at Brooklyn College. Ellis also earned a degree in business from Baylor University. After several years of service, Ellis left the Air Force, and the family settled in Houston.

Ellis became a Certified Public Accountant. He worked for Al’s Formal Wear for over 40 years. As a real estate and finance executive, Ellis helped steer the company through their period of greatest expansion. After retirement, Ellis became a SCORE volunteer, lending his experience to help those launching small businesses in the community.

Judaism was an important part of Ellis’s life. He served Congregation Brith Shalom (Houston) in many capacities, including leading the congregation as its President. As a patriarch of his family, he led the massive family Passover Seders for many years. He was considered by many as a real mensch.

Ellis is survived by his brother Donald Rush (Barbara); his children, Laura (Bob Rosenberg), Beryl (Anna Mattei), and Nancy; his grandchildren, Aaron (Lauren), Rebecca (Cheng Lee), Shawn (Leah), Joel, and Avery; his four greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 2:30 pm at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonet Street, Houston, Texas 77074.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Congregation Brith Shalom, Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services or a charity of your choice.
