Anti-trans bills

-

Regarding “Transgender college sports ban passes key vote in Texas House,” (May 17): Buried in the 12th paragraph of this story is the key fact that exposes what a charade Senate Bill 15 is.

According to an analysis by OutSport, out of the 36 transgender athletes who have competed openly at the college level, none competed in Texas. Zero. Nada.

Meanwhile, there is a very real crisis with deadly consequences that has been a clear and present danger for Texans for a decade: The crisis of the uninsured.

Texas leads the nation with 5 million of its citizens lacking health insurance coverage.

In 2018, the Lone Star State boasted the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of uninsured in the nation at 18 percent.

Why is the Texas GOP wasting precious time in the Texas Legislature passing a bill that addresses a nonexistent problem while ignoring a devastating crisis that is killing Texans?

The answer: The GOP needs to stoke its base by waging a cruel, relentless war on transgender Texans. Meanwhile, Texans go without health insurance and health care.

Regarding “Texas may soon ban medical care for trans youth. Here’s where they can find support locally,” (May 19): Sometimes I am shaken to my core by the ignorance and self-importance of our state “leaders.”

At the moment I’m watching their actions regarding trans care. Do they not realize the inhumanity of their decisions, and the pain and despair they’ll inflict?

I have watched several families — wonderful people — who have left Texas in order to find acceptance, medical care and common humanity in other states.

I am at a loss.
