Uvalde anniversary
Regarding “Falkenberg: We’re Pulitzer finalists. It’s bittersweet,” (May 12): We agree with Nick Powell. Refusing to look away from the ongoing carnage of gun violence in Texas will change your life.
As volunteers with Moms Demand Action, we thank you for pointing people to our organization, covering these stories and writing these editorials, shooting after shooting. Your work matters.
I wept reading in your recent editorial that “women’s bodies are ballistic shields” because parents often share with me their own plans to protect their babies during a shooting. For Mother’s Day, we said, “Keep your flowers.”
We rallied in Allen for a federal assault weapons ban instead. We rallied for safety and peace of mind.
As we approach May 24, the one-year mark of the tragedy at Robb Elementary, Houstonians can honor grieving mothers by attending the vigil planned in Uvalde or one of the Moms Demand Action vigils planned in Houston.
Then text FEDUP to 64433 to call your Congress members and urge them to act on commonsense gun policy.
As another legislative session comes to a close with absolutely no meaningful action toward preventing gun violence, Texans must finally acknowledge that our old voting habits are clearly not serving us.
We cannot vote for candidates unwilling to pass gun safety legislation and our institutions cannot endorse them. Only when we prove to lawmakers that gun violence prevention is a priority issue for voters will they finally do the will of most Texans, instead of the gun lobby.
