A’s top Rays amid ‘reverse boycott’
OAKLAND, Calif. — Pinch-hitter Carlos Pérez broke a tie with an RBI groundout in the eighth inning, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Tuesday night in front of a spirited crowd at the Coliseum.
The A’s drew a season-high attendance of 27,759 as Oakland fans held a “reverse boycott” to protest the team’s planned move to Las Vegas.
It was a playoff-like atmosphere for the A’s seasonhigh seventh straight victory, with the crowd repeatedly chanting “Sell the team!” and “Stay in Oakland!”
Yankees 7, Mets 6: Clay Holmes pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, and the Yankees rallied from four runs down against Max Scherzer to beat the host Mets in a wild Subway Series opener.
Twins 7, Brewers 5: Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer for Minnesota to cap a four-run ninth inning off Milwaukee closer Devin Williams, giving the Twins a walkoff victory over the Brewers.
Rockies 7, Red Sox 6 (10): Randal Grichuk lined a two-run double in a three-run 10th inning, and Colorado held on to beat Boston at Fenway Park.
Reds 5, Royals 4: Cincinnati batted through the lineup during a five-run second inning, and the Reds held on to win at Kansas City.
Angels 7, Rangers 3: Hunter Renfroe’s two-run home run capped a three-run sixth inning, and visiting Los Angeles beat AL West-leading Texas.
Phillies 15, Diamondbacks 3: Kyle Schwarber led off the game with a 450-foot homer, and Philadelphia poured it on from there in a rout of host Arizona.
Giants 11, Cardinals 3: Mike Yastrzemski and Patrick Bailey homered as San Francisco beat St. Louis.
Orioles 11, Blue Jays 6: Gunnar Henderson hit his first career grand slam as host Baltimore beat Toronto.
Padres 6, Guardians 3: Gary Sánchez hit a threerun homer, as San Diego beat visiting Cleveland.
Cubs 11, Pirates 3: Ian Happ hit a three-run, firstinning homer, and host Chicago routed Pittsburgh.
Mariners 9, Marlins 3: Mike Ford homered twice to power Seattle to a win over visiting Miami.
Dodgers 5, White Sox 1: Tony Gonsolin threw six shutout innings to help host Los Angeles top Chicago.
