Watch Paxton’s trial

-

Regarding “Dueling legal strategies emerge in Texas AG Ken Paxton’s impeachment trial,” (Sept. 8): Don’t ask me why I was surprised to read in Sunday’s Chronicle that less than onethird of Texans have even heard about the legal woes of Attorney General Ken

Paxton. Guess that should have been obvious to me given he was re-elected twice while under indictment. Kathy Bernhardt, Spring

Are those supporting Ken Paxton so blinded by ideology that they do so simply because he flies under the banner of “conservative Republican”?

During his entire time as Texas attorney general, Paxton has consistently demonstrated that he is dishonest, morally and ethically corrupt and self-serving, with only a display of contempt for the citizens he is supposed to represent. Is this who we want as Texas’ top cop?

Texas is a conservative Republican state. There’s little doubt that the next attorney general will also be a conservative Republican, but we can hope for a Republican whose values, ethics and ideals will be in place — someone who will respect the office and position of public service, bringing pride, dignity and integrity to a position that is now a source of disgrace and embarrassment to all Texans.

Paxton’s defense attorneys are sending dog whistles to the Texas Republican senators who are to determine his fate. They reminded the jury that Paxton was elected twice by millions of voters. What they seemed to be really stating is that even if the senators believe Paxton is guilty of the charges, if they want to be re-elected, they must find him not guilty.

The trial is being televised, and the defense knows this. I pray that the Senate jurors have the strength and courage to find Paxton guilty if evidence proves this, instead of succumbing to strong-arm tactics by the defense attorneys. They must remember that no one is above the law — even a member of their own party.

Enough is enough. To these conservative Christians in the Senate: God is watching. He knows exactly what is in your hearts, and He will hold each of you accountable. I commend the Texas state representatives who viewed the evidence and voted to impeach. Even though many are Republicans, they did the right thing for the state of Texas. Let us hope the Senate does the same.
