Scherzer exits early in Rangers’ victory

TORONTO — Robbie Grossman hit a two-run home run, Max Scherzer pitched 5 shutout innings before leaving because of a right triceps spasm and the Texas Rangers beat Toronto 6-3 on Tuesday night, leapfroggi­ng the Blue Jays in the AL wild-card race.

Corey Seager had three hits, drove in a run and scored twice as the Rangers (80-64) won their fourth straight and wrapped up the season series against Toronto (80-65) with two games remaining.

Scherzer (13-6) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two. He threw 73 pitches, 49 for strikes. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said Scherzer will undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

Mariners 8, Angels 0: J.P. Crawford hit a three-run double that broke open the game, Eugenio Suárez homered and had an early RBI single, and Seattle scored seven runs with two outs in a home win.

The Mariners snapped a four-game losing streak and took advantage of Houston’s loss to last-place Oakland to pull within 1 ½ games of the AL West-leading Astros.

Twins 3, Rays 2: Willi Castro hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning and Minnesota rallied to beat Tampa Bay Rays at home.

Cardinals 5, Orioles 2: Adam Wainwright pitched five solid innings for his 199th career win, and St. Louis spoiled John Means’ return for host Baltimore.

Braves 7, Phillies 6 (10): Matt Olson tied Atlanta’s single-season record with his 51st home run and the Braves moved to the cusp of the NL East title with a road win in Philadelph­ia.

Rockies 6, Cubs 4: Kris Bryant hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning and had three RBIs against his former team, helping host Colorado beat Chicago.

Brewers 3, Marlins 1: Josh Donaldson homered for the first time with his new team and Freddy Peralta turned in another stellar outing for Milwaukee.

Reds 6, Tigers 5 (10): Tyler Stephenson had an RBI single in the 10th inning in Cincinnati’s win in Detroit off Tigers closer Alex Lange.

Mets 7, Diamondbac­ks 4: Ronny Mauricio hit his first major league homer and Pete Alonso hit his 44th of the season for New York.

Guardians 3, Giants 1: Tyler Freeman singled home a pair of runs in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and left Cleveland past San Francisco.
