HPD provides new details in ex-NFL player’s fatal crash

- By Matt deGrood STAFF WRITER

Houston police on Monday afternoon released the names of those killed in the crash involving former NFL player D.J. Hayden and former University of Houston football players.

Christian Herrera, 25, was driving a black Chrysler 300 sedan when he went through a red light heading south on Fannin Street and struck an Acura, police said. The crash caused three people to be ejected from the Acura SUV, and forced the Chrysler off the road, where it struck and killed Frank Johnson, 31.

It was not known how fast Herrera was driving, but initial reports indicated he was traveling at a high rate of speed when his car struck the Acura.

Herrera and the driver of the Acura SUV, Lauren Robinson, 32, died at the scene. Paramedics also pronounced Johnson and Izuchu Oragwu, 31, dead at the scene, police said. Hayden and Zach McMillian were transported to a hospital, where they later died, officials said.

Two other people in the Acura — a 32-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman — remained hospitalized Monday afternoon. The woman was in critical condition, the man in stable condition, but both victims have talked with police.

The University of Houston in a statement identified the man who survived the crash as Jeffrey Lewis, who like Hayden, Oragwu and McMillian, was a former University of Houston football player.

On Sunday, Robinson’s family confirmed her involvement in the crash to Houston TV station KTRKTV ABC 13. Robinson grew up with Hayden, McMillian and Oragwu and went to school together in the Fort Bend Independent School District, according to the TV station.

Investigators don’t believe anyone else was in the Chrysler, officials said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
