Super recognizers working for London’s Metropolitan Police Service deal with images like this on a daily basis. It shows Alice Gross on the day of her murder walking in front of a train station. It was only after watching thousands of hours of footage like this that the special unit was able to identify her and her murderer, Arnis Zalkalns (right)— and the place where their paths had crossed. The CCTV recordings show that the perpetrator made three attempts to stash Alice’s corpse. But the super recognizers could not explain why the girl was walking through London alone nearly four hours after leaving her home.

FINAL PHOTOS It is one of the last signs of life: On August 28, 2014, Alice Gross passed by a surveillance camera as she walked through London.
