It’s never a sin­gle touch that ex­poses a con man. But when it comes to the Pinoc­chio ges­ture, this is one of the surest signs that some­one is try­ing to pull the wool over your eyes. Rea­son: When a per­son is telling a lie, his blood pres­sure usu­ally rises. That in­creases blood flow to the tip of the nose, stim­u­lat­ing the nerves there— a sen­sa­tion sim­i­lar to an itchy nose. The liar starts rub­bing it. And now the key is to watch where the hands wan­der next. If they head over to the mouth or neck or they rub the cheeks, game over— caught red-handed!
