A $150,000 contract to design a solar power hot water and steam system for the American Linen Supply Co. of El Centro was awarded Thursday to Jacobs Engineering Co. of Pasadena by the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration. The proposal, one of four funded nationwide by ERDA, calls for Jacobs to complete detailed designs and analysis of a solar water heating system to supply the company’s washing machines and steam presses. If the detail design is accepted by ERDA, construction on as many as 1,400 troughlike solar collectors could start by next January. CALEXICO — The Heffernan Memorial District Hospital Board contemplated filing for bankruptcy in a meeting with attorneys Tuesday.

At issue is how the district will retire an estimated $820,000 debt after it leases the facility to Westworld Community Healthcare Corp.

The board took no action, but is scheduled to meet with attorneys again in two weeks. Part of Tuesday’s session was in closed session because of the possibility of litigation. The first phase of the lease begins June 1, but Westworld, which has signed a 40-year lease, will be only financially and legally responsible until the state transfers the license, which is expected to happen by about Jan. 1, 1987.
