Consider traditional values this election

- KAREN KELLEY Karen Kelley lives in Brawley.

There is very little time left before the presidential election to evaluate what is really important to consider before pulling the lever on Nov. 8.

It’s not just a choice of candidates to consider. It’s what’s on the line for you, me and the country. The consideration of the Supreme Court justices that will hang in the balance of who is elected is consequential in how our country is run in the future. Our children and their children are to be greatly considered.

Another important factor to thoughtfully peruse is the defense of our country. We’ve been already threatened by infiltration of ISIS devotees here in America. The borders are so porous that the Border Patrol has no defense against ISIS on our southern borders. Since we live almost on top of the border we should be vigilant to that threat and hopefully choose a path to seal the borders from would-be terrorists.

As a Christian, I deplore the stance that the country has taken on religious freedom. When a coach is unable to privately say a prayer of thanks after a football game without losing his job, things need to change. Our children, for the most part, don’t know the words to Christmas carols anymore, because they are not a part of the public school curriculum.

Our country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and yet we aren’t allowed to enforce them. “Merry Christmas” isn’t used in most advertisements at Christmas. “Happy holidays” has taken its place. This is a travesty. Let’s bring the true meaning of Christmas back into our country.

Jobs have been destroyed for thousands of workers that want, only, to work at the jobs their fathers and grandfathers gave them the ability to work. I’m speaking precisely of the coal miners that have been out of jobs for a multitude of years. Theirs are only a miniscule part of the jobs that have gone wanting due to regulations that have been unjustly enforced.

I’m just an ordinary citizen, but proud to be an American. We live in a country rich in traditions, resources and most decidedly a population of good, loyal Americans. Let’s be true to our forefathers, and bring back the traditions, work ethics and safeguards that they so diligently fought for so that we might live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
