2 inmates accused of fatal stabbing.

A 53-year-old Calipatria State Prison inmate was reportedly stabbed to death by two other inmates at 1:50 p.m. Friday, the California Department of Correction­s and Rehabilita­tion reported.

Fred Archuleta, was allegedly attacked by two inmates who had used prison-manufactur­ed weapons and had ignored the prison’s yard alarm ordering all inmates in the yard to stop and get down once the attack was underway, a CDCR press release stated.

Archuleta’s two assailants also allegedly ignored correction­al officers’ commands to stop, resulting in one nonlethal 40-millimeter round being fired to help stop the attack, the press release stated. No staff members were injured in the attack.

The California Department of Correction­s and Rehabilita­tion Office of the Inspector General has also been notified of the incident. Inmate movement had been limited to facilitate the investigat­ion. Saldaña was received into CDCR custody from San Bernardino County in 2015, to serve a sentence of 51 years to life with the possibilit­y of parole for first-degree murder, the press release stated.

Bonilla was received into CDCR custody from Riverside County in 2013 to serve a sentence of life without the possibilit­y of parole for first-degree murder, possession/ manufactur­e of a deadly weapon by a prisoner and first-degree robbery.

Archuleta was received into CDCR custody from San Bernardino County on Jan. 24, 2006, to serve a sentence of 65 years to life with the possibilit­y of parole for conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of a firearm by an ex-felon and criminal gang activity.

Calipatria State Prison opened in 1992 and currently houses about 3,800 minimum- and maximum-security inmates. The prison offers academic classes and vocational programs and employs more than 1,000 people. For more informatio­n, visit www.cdcr.ca.gov
