BRAWLEY — Ross Wilson first learned how to swim at around the age of two and by the time he was 7 years old, the Brawley native began swimming competitively.

Wilson maintained his love and work ethic for the sport through to his high school years and on Tuesday of last week, Wilson committed to spend at least another four years in the water as he signed his letter of intent to compete for Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisc.

“I have a profile on a recruiting website and they contacted me through there,” said the 17-year-old.

In October, Wilson traveled to Wisconsin to visit the university, where he had the opportunity to tour the campus and meet with the team.

“The school and the team were just a good fit,” Wilson said. “It caught my eye and just felt like something I was used to.”

In addition to the swim program being a good fit, Wilson said the school offered his preferred major of geospatial science, or information technology.

When Wilson competes for the Red Men next year, the team will likely used his skills in the 50 free and 100 free and possible 200 fly.

“They recruited me for specific events, but once I get there, depending on what the team needs they might change my program for the season,” Wilson explained.

While Wilson admits his favorite event is the 50 free, he’s proven he can succeed in almost any event, which likely sits well with the Carthage coaching staff.

Last season, Wilson set new school records in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 individual medley.
