It will never be Trumpcare because Trump doesn’t care

- KENT BUSH

How long will it take? President Donald Trump still has some supporters — granted, it is only about 37 percent of Americans, but that is still more than it seems he deserves.

Most of that 37 percent are ardent supporters, true believers, good soldiers led mostly by blind faith.

I don’t get it.

How long will it take for them to admit that they took the bait? They bought the lie that voting for Trump would mean a return to Republican ideals.

In about 2 months in office, Trump hasn’t been the masterful dealer he pretended to be.

He hasn’t even made moves that a person of average competence in that office would find easily negotiable.

He has spent a much greater percentage of his time on vacation and the golf course than his predecessor.

President Trump has ignored the greatest intelligence network in the world and tweeted opinions and “alternative facts” based on FOX News reports and reports on even less credible channels and websites. That is misguided, to say the least. Trump’s travel bans have failed to meet constitutional standards.

It has been revealed that he chose a national security advisor who was actively working as an agent for another country and his campaign and administration are under investigation by the FBI for their alleged ties and collusion with Russia.

And the wall across our southern border won’t be paid for — or reimbursed — by Mexico.

This fact runs diametrically opposed to the chants he led in rallies with thousands of people wearing Make America Great Again snapback caps.

On Friday, 7 years of Republican promises imploded with a whimper. Voters gave the GOP control of the White House and both houses of Congress. Years of campaigning against “Obamacare” paid off. They won at the ballot box.

But when those same voters figured out that Obamacare was the nickname of the Affordable Care Act, they weren’t as excited about repealing it.

The Republicans called the Affordable Care Act Obamacare because they wanted to hang it around President Barack Obama’s neck and use it as a political tool.

They did that all day, every day for 7 years.

No one will ever call the American Health Care Act Trumpcare, because frankly, President Trump doesn’t care that it failed.

Not only is he not concerned, the man who promised to ask for a repeal bill on day one and accomplish replacing Obamacare “very, very quickly” says he never said any of that.

Is he lying or just conveniently forgetful? Who knows?

But he isn’t doing what he promised in all of those rallies.

The Republican mantra of “repeal and replace” filled campaign ads and conservative newscasts for more than half of a decade.

When given a chance to repeal or replace President Obama’s signature legislation, they failed miserably.

Trump isn’t even worried about it. He is moving on.

After more than 60 Congressional votes with Obama’s veto to protect them, Trump and Ryan didn’t even put them on the record.

Now everyone can go back to their districts and claim to have kept their promises.

They promised reform and delivered only plausible deniability.

Everyone knows everyone else’s lies so they cover each other like the co-conspirators that they are.

Texas Republican Congressman Joe Barton called a spade a spade.

“Sometimes you’re playing Fantasy Football and sometimes you’re in the real game,” Rep. Barton said.

“We knew the president (Obama), if we could get a repeal bill to his desk, would almost certainly veto it. This time we knew if it got to the president’s desk it would be signed.” So nothing changes. Republican voters have seen their hopes dashed in 2 months.

While Obama was president, the GOP-led Congress voted to repeal Obamacare more than 60 times.

Now, under a Republican president, they have voted on it zero times and they have decided there is no more work left to do.

Now what?

Voters who gave the Republicans a majority in both houses of Congress and the White House are finding out that they have been nothing but pawns in a confidence game.

No one cares about what they want.

Now, lawmakers will move on to tax reform to make sure the ultra-rich get paid back for campaign support and the cycle of cynicism will continue.

The GOP called Obama and the Democrats the enemy and offered to help if only voters would do their part.

The voters delivered.

The Republican Congress didn’t — and won’t.
