Southwest High School dental team
The Southwest High School students in its Health Occupations Students of America dental program swept the competition at the state leadership conference in Sacramento recently. In the dental science division, eight of the top 10 students who placed in the competition were from Southwest. Out of all 20 students who came from around the state to compete in the dental division, 14 of them were from Southwest High. Kudos to the students who practiced after school and weekends to win so many honors.
Jacqueline Valadez, SHS teacher
Valadez is the SHS’s HOSA Advisor and was named the Cal-HOSA Advisor of the year in the state leadership conference in Sacramento. Her dedication to her students are evident with the success they had. Last year, she was nominated by the Imperial County Office of Education for California Department of Education’s Teacher of the year and nominated as National Life Group’s LifeChanger of the Year. Congratulations for Valadez for the honor.
USBP town hall meeting
On Tuesday night, U.S. Border Patrol El Centro Sector Chief Agent Rodney Scott gave a brief history on the border patrol, its mission and dedication to protect our borders. He also took questions and answered as best he could. It’s a great step in the right direction as far as transparency at a time when other political forces are bending the opinions we might have about our border patrol agents. We encourage the border patrol and other law enforcement agencies to continue to host these town hall meetings and allow the public to interact in a public setting.
Distinguished women at Women’s Leadership Soiree
On Saturday, 19 women were invited by the Women’s Leadership Soiree to talk about their success in hopes of motivating other women to pursue their dreams. Those invited include: Norma Bustamante, Lupita Rodriguez, Rosalind Guerro, Marianne Fenley, Esther Gomez, Belinda Mills, Hon. Gina Cruz, Rosemarie Wood, Elizabeth Ibarra, Martha Garcia, Ellie Burgueno, Angie Pena, Summer Wong, Clarissa Acuna, Valentina Estes, Rosana Pacheco, Cheryl Viegas-Walker, Juanita Salas and Rosie Fernandez.
Kudos to all the women for their success in their respective careers and just as importantly, kudos for looking to motivate other women to pursue their dreams as well.
Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District outreach efforts
The Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District has held two town hall meetings so far with one left in April as it looks to get feedback from residents in our community. The organization is simply looking to listen to residents and share what concerns our residents as it looks to continuously improve its services for our community. The final town hall is set for 5:30 p.m. April 13 in the Calexico city hall chambers.
GSA eases traffic into Mexico
Soon, a northbound lane at the Calexico downtown port of entry will be turned into a southbound vehicle inspection lane. If you’ve made your way into Mexico, you noticed the wait time to enter the bordering country has become a nuisance.
The pending construction comes in response to the extensive southbound Imperial Avenue traffic congestion that had resulted from the port expansion project’s Jan. 9 closure of two of the three southbound vehicle inspection lanes south of Second Street.
Kudos to the organizations that decided to make the change to help avoid congestion and other issues in the city.
