IMPERIAL — After taking a year off from swimming, Imperial High senior Brad Thomason decided to get back in water this spring.

“I just really missed it and wanted to do it again,” said the 17-yearold. “It’s something I’d done since I was about 5 or 6 years old.”

Thomason’s return to the water was a success as the Tiger helped Imperial in meets last week against Brawley Union and Holtville and Calexico earlier this week.

Against the Wildcats, Thomason anchored the winning 400-meter free relay with Joseph Scariano, Kevin Barrientos, Gus Jimenez that earned a CIF consideration.

“It was really exciting when we got it,” Thomason said of the consideration time. “I went to CIF my sophomore year when I was swimming at Southwest (High School), so I’m glad that I get to go back.”

Against Holtville and Calexico, Thomason won the 50 free and the 100 free and was on the winning 200 and 400 free relays teaming with Scariano, Barrientos and Jimenez once again.

Thomason said while the relays are always exciting, his favorite is the 50 free.

“I like that it’s a sprint, just up and back and it really just comes down to who is fastest,” he said.

What do you enjoy most about your sport?

I like that feeling you get right before the buzzer. It’s a good feeling right before you jump in.

What is one of your more memorable moments in your sport?

My sophomore year at IVLs. My teammate (Jonathan Puga) and I were always neck-and-neck all season and at finals he beat me by .01 second in the 50 free.

Who inspires you and why?

My dad inspires me because he’s always been a great role model and made me want to be better in everything I do.

What are your goals for the rest of this season?

To make CIF times for the 100 free and both relays and beat Puga in the 50 free.
