Go Beyond the Clipboard with Corey Moreno.

As one progresses in life, any free time available to help others is eventually taken away by everyday responsibilities.

Even though he holds a separate full time job, the Holtville High School head baseball coach Corey Moreno still makes it a priority to be there for his players the best he can be — and admires those who do the same.

“Whether it’s paperwork or on the field, coaching is another full time job. It’s hard for a person to take the time out of their work or family and coach a team,” explained Moreno.

From his tee-ball days to his time spent playing at Imperial Valley College, respect for coaches is something Moreno has always felt.

After playing three years of varsity baseball at Holtville High, Moreno graduated from the school in 2000. He then went on to play two years at IVC where he finally decided what he was truly passionate about.

“When I was in high school, I said I wanted to come back and be the head coach one of these days because of all the head coaches that helped me out here,” said Moreno on why he decided to become a head coach.

Feeling the desire to give back to the school’s baseball program, the Holtville High head coach immediately applied when an opportunity for the position opened up.

Before returning to his alma mater, Moreno coached a few middle school teams and spent three years as an assistant coach for Southwest High School’s varsity baseball team.

Currently in his third season as Holtville’s head coach, Moreno still keeps in contact with many of his former coaches and even looks to them for advice.

At the start of the season, Moreno and his team were on a 0-4 losing streak. After speaking with one of his former coaches, the Holtville coach received some much needed advice he would use for the rest of the season.

“It gets a little frustrating at times because us coaches feel like we’re hired to win. It’s not about winning, it’s more about developing these kids to be better players and better people than they were before,” Moreno was advised.

The Vikings then entered a 10-game winning streak and currently holds a record of 11-8.

“My biggest goal as a coach is just to continue developing these kids as good young men so whenever they go out into the world they know what to do in tough situations and to teach them they shouldn’t quit anything and keep moving forward,” stated the Holtville head coach on his coaching philosophy.
