Central continues CIF run after 8-0 win
Defense and base running is what the Central Union High softball team has been working on all season.
Thanks to their efforts, the team was able to win their home CIF-San Diego Section Division III playin game against La Jolla Country Day by a score of 8-0 on Tuesday night.
“I always believe that you’re going to hit or you’re not going to hit, but if you always play defense you’re always going to be in the game,” stated Central Union head softball coach Chris Acosta, who emphasized the importance of defense on his team throughout the regular season.
With Central’s defense behind her, pitcher Paola Verdugo was able to put on a winning performance, with a majority of her throws being strikes while only issuing one walk the entire game.
“I was very excited and nervous because it could’ve possible been my last game but I just went in there telling myself that I did it before and I could do it again,” explained Verdugo on playing in a CIF game.
Central’s Jessica Acosta and Janyssa Martin each scored twice and lead their team in runs scored. Followed were teammates Jeweleana Rodriguez, Amanda Alcala, Brianna Gonzalez and Alyssa Gonzalez who each scored once.
“It’s a little snowball that’s starting to roll and get bigger every time. This moment is just going to help us get through CIF and hopefully end up on top,” commented Verdugo on her team advancing to tournament play.
“We’re just going to continue working on what we’re working on,” said Acosta on his team’s preparation for their next CIF game.
The Spartans are set to play at University City at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in San Diego in the first round of the CIF-San Diego Section Div. III double elimination tournament.
