Athletes fare well at CIF prelims

SAN DIEGO — The CIF-San Diego Section track and field preliminar­ies took place on Saturday morning here with various Imperial Valley athletes faring well for their schools in their respective divisions.

Southwest High’s Tyler Saikhon qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles after taking first place in his heat with a time of 14.83 seconds.

Saikhon also qualified for the 300-meter hurdle final after taking first in his prelim heat with a time of 39.21.

Fellow Eagle Justin Cordova also qualified for two finals including the 100-meter dash running a personal-best 11.00.

Cordova also qualified for the 200-meter final after running a 22.30 in the prelim.

Also for the Eagles, Ryan Silva-Bradley qualified for the high jump final with a leap of 5-feet, 11-inches in the prelims.

For Imperial High, Jesus Vasquez qualified for the finals in a total of three events, including the 110-meter hurdles, the triple jump and the 400-meter relay.

Vasquez ran the 110 in 15:31, tallied a mark of 43-feet, 4.75 inches in the triple jump and together with David Camacho, Hiram Alcala and Joey Tarango completed the 400 relay in 3-minutes, 28.25-seconds.

Also for Imperial, the boys’ 100-meter relay team qualified for the finals after Raymond Beamon, Malik McNair, Rudy Avila and David Savage ran the event in 43.54.

For the Tiger girls, Tania Greve moved on in the shot put with a throw of 33-feet, 5-inches.

For Brawley, sprinter Isaac Garcia qualified for both the 100 and 200 meters.

Garcia ran the 100 in 10.95 and the 200 in 22.18.

Angel Palacios advanced in the 800 meters after finishing in 2:00.24 and Greg Zarate advanced in the shotput with a mark of 43-feet, 6.50-inches.

Also for the Wildcats, Garcia and Palacio combined with Leonardo Gutierrez and Beto Lopez to run the 400-meter relay in 3:28.05 to advance to the final.

For Central, two athletes advanced in the field events including Steven Marquez and Christina Marquez.

Both Steven and Christina advanced in the high jump with marks of 6-feet, 3-inches and 5-feet, 1-inch, respective­ly.
