ALEXICO — Given its proximity to the state, it’s not surprising the softball roster for Arizona Western College is full of California talent.

Next season the Matadors will also field a number of California players, with two of those coming from the Imperial Valley.

Last week, Danielle Burgos and Michelle Roldan signed their letters of intent to play at AWC next season after completing their senior season at Calexico High.

Burgos spent four years on the Bulldogs’ varsity roster holding down the shortstop position for the last three years.

Through her effort with Calexico and her travel team Diamond Runners, Burgos and other talent drew AWC scouts to an Imperial Valley League game earlier this year.

“They came to the game versus Brawley this season and after they talked to us about the program,” Burgos explained.

A few months later, Burgos went to the campus and was offered a scholarship that will take care of most of her costs.

“I really liked it,” Burgos said. “It’s close to home. Also, during those two years the coaches try to help get you somewhere to play at the next level.”

This season, Burgos picked up All-Imperial Valley League first team honors and last season helped the Bulldogs to a CIF-San Diego Section Div. II title.

Burgos said she was excited to continue her softball career as it was something she’s done for a long time.

“I’m looking forward to the experience of being on my own and seeing what college softball is like,” she said. “I’m excited for the whole experience.”

Burgos will join an AWC squad that finished this season with an overall record of 36-21 and an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference of 28-20.

Burgos said she plans to study kinesiology at AWC and will take with her the memories and lessons she learned from local coaches.

“I enjoyed meeting the other girls and the van rides and just playing with them,” she said. “I think one of the most important thing that I learned here was to never give up and to keep your head up.”
