Lawmaker announces water hearings.

A state lawmaker announced a series of statewide hearings to address water issues.

Assemblyma­n Marco Corona, with the Institutio­nal Revolution­ary Party, said the hearings seek to analyze the status of water in Baja California.

The hearings will include participat­ion of residents, experts, public officials and stakeholde­rs.

Corona, who chairs the Energy and Water Resources Commission, said the Mexicali hearing has been scheduled for 11 a.m. June 27 at Universida­d Xochicalco in eastern Mexicali and just south of the East Port of Entry.

“We are making every effort to hold these hearings in a transparen­t manner by involving water experts who can help us know the status we are living in the state,” Corona said. “Through residents we will have the opportunit­y to have a single, unique document that can become the state new Water Law.”

The list of speakers invited to the hearings include Dr. Alfonso Cortez of the Northern Border College, Dr. Jesus Roman Calleros with the Agricultur­al Science Institute of the Autonomous University of Baja California, Dr. Helena Caeri Baca Leon, national coordinato­r of Water for All Movement, biologist and environmen­tal consultant Sergio Javier Mata Ugalde and Dr. Elena Burns, coordinato­r for Sustainabi­lity f the Metropolit­an University.

Corona said the list of authoritie­s include representa­tives from the State Water Commission, the National Water Commission and the Internatio­nal Water and Boundaries Commission.

The lawmaker said some of the topics to be addressed during the hearings include climate change, sustainabl­e developmen­t, water reuse and regulation­s.
